SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Georgia governor Nathan Deal hopes the federal government keeps the money coming to deepen the Savannah harbor.

A congressional subcommittee recently approved $49 million for the project. The state has long said they need to contribute about twice that to complete the project by the 2022 expected finish. Governor Deal approved an additional 35 million dollars in this year's state budget for the project.

"We are still hopeful the federal government will come up with even more money because of the ratio, we're still ahead as far as the state's portion of that ratio," the Governor said. "We need the federal government to continue to supply significant amounts of money so that we can complete this project in a timely fashion. It's important for our state. It's important for the United States as well."

The Savannah Harbor Expansion Project deepens the Savannah Harbor shipping channel from 42 feet to 47 feet. The extra depth will allow an additional 3,600 cargo containers in each transit. The project costs close to a billion dollars.
