HYDERABAD: Telangana will soon get two new government medical colleges as the chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on Tuesday approved the same.
According to a press release issued by the chief minister's office, the two new medical colleges will be established in Suryapet and Nalgonda districts. "To this effect honorable chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao signed on the concerned file in response to proposals from medical and health department.
150 seats are allotted in each of those colleges. In addition, 150 admissions are going on in Siddipet medical college which has already been sanctioned," read the release.
Officials claim that the government will sanction Rs 500 crore to each college to build the infrastructure as per the Medical Council of India norms. "Of Rs 500 crore, Rs 450 crore are meant for capital expenditure and the rest of the amount is for human resources," said K Srinivas Rao, OSD to health minister.
The existing hospitals in the two districts will be upgraded along with a new building for the college. "The number of beds in the existing hospitals will be increased. Apart from this, administrative block, classrooms and laboratories will be developed as part of the college," said Rao.
Officials said that it will take one to two years for the new medical colleges to be operational.
The CM's approval to establish two new government medical colleges has emerged as a major boost to medical education in the state. "The decision will benefit meritorious students who want to seek admission in government medical colleges. Before Telangana formation, there were only four medical colleges. With two medical colleges, students will have more options," G Srinivas, advisor of Telangana Junior Doctors Association, adding that those from rural areas who were finding it difficult to find seats in urban areas can apply to these colleges.
