Neglected by son, elderly couple in Kakinada seeks nod to commit suicide

Ms Lakshmi said her husband had earned nearly Rs 2 crore worth of properties.

Kakinada: Mr Pitta Apparao, a 62-year old man suffering from kidney disease, and his wife Lakshmi of Sarpavaram village in Kakinada rural Mandal submitted a representation to superintendent of police Vishal Gunni, seeking permission to end their lives due to ill-health and ill-treatment by their son.

Ms Lakshmi said her husband had earned nearly Rs 2 crores worth of properties. The couple have two daughters, who were married two decades ago, and a son, Ravi. The son lives in a separate portion of the house, and has reportedly taken away the property documents.

“We asked Ravi for money for his father’s treatment. He says his father is over 60 years of age, and does not require medical treatment, Ms Lakshmi told superintendent of police Vishal Gunni

She said given this situation, she was not able to afford medical treatment for Mr Apparao. She sought permission to end their lives.

Mr Gunni gave them an assurance that he would take action against Ravi and their problem would be sorted out. He said that the government had enacted Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 and the children of the parents should take care on their parents and they should give maintenance to them.

He said that according to the Act, he would sort out the problems of the couple.
