MUMBAI: Fewer engineering aspirants scored 176 and above out of 200 in the MHT-CET results released by the state’s CET cell on Saturday evening. The highest score in the engineering entrance test too fell marginally to 195 from 197 in 2017. While students will get to check their scores post-midnight, Ahmednagar’s Aditya Abhang and Mumbai’s Mona Gandhi from Kandivli topped the entrance test for admissions to engineering colleges in the state.

Last year, 297 students scored 176 and higher in MHT-CET. This year, the numbers dropped to 257, though most students found the paper easier. The total number of students who scored more than 100 in PCM, too, dropped to 22,073 from 22,236 last year. In fact, students said the paper was the easiest in recent years. Durgesh Mangeshkar from IIT Pratishthan said he was surprised with this year’s results. “Our students found the paper very easy. The drop in top scorers could be because these aspirants prepare for syllabus from Class XI and XII both, as their focus is the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), and CET test students only on Class XII syllabus,” said Mangeshkar. The cutoffs in some of the top colleges are likely to drop this year. Subhash Joshi from Science Parviar said the paper was easy, but most students have their eyes set on JEE.
Aditya Abhang, who scored 195 in the PCM (physics-chemistry-mathematics) group in the test, said, “Though I have appeared for JEE (Advanced), I wish to pursue computer science from College of Engineering, Pune, using my CET scores.” Gandhi, who topped the state in the girls’ category, is from Prakash College in Kandivli. She told TOI that she had expected around 190. “I am now waiting for the JEE (Advanced) results to make a final decision. If I am to decide a college based on the MHT-CET score, then I will be happy to get a seat in VJTI. But, I will take the final call after the JEE results,” said Gandhi, who scored 188 in the test. Gandhi scored 90.6% in HSC.
In the PCB category, Abhijit Kadam topped with 188 and Jhanvi Mokashi scored 183 and topped the girls’ category. Since admissions to medical and dental colleges will be done on NEET scores, PCB marks in CET will be used only for pharmacy and BSc (agriculture) admissions.
Students had raised some queries and objections to questions in the CET paper after the answer key was released. The subject experts found that three questions—two from maths and one from chemistry—had discrepancies. The CET cell, therefore, decided to make the three questions invalid and bonus marks of five were given to all.
