New rules aimed at increasing recycling across Rhondda Cynon Taf have come into force - but it can be tricky knowing exactly what to put in what bag.

The new rules, which came into effect from June 4, aim to increase recycling figures to meet the Welsh Government target of 70% by 2024-25 by limiting the amount of black bag/bin waste residents can throw away.

With a greater push towards recycling, Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT) Council have released a guide on dozens of household items showing how residents can correctly get rid of them.

Under the new rules, the council will introduce a fixed penalty of £100, which will be issued as a "last resort" to residents who ignore warnings from enforcement officers and repeatedly refuse to recylce.

From June 4, any household without a wheelie bin will be able to put out two black bags for fortnightly collection.

The council said that two wheelie bins will be regarded as side waste and ask residents to remove their second bin.

If necessary, the council said they may remove the second bin.

Any black bags deemed "excessively heavy" will not be collected.

Ash waste will be collected in "manageable" sized black bags, in addition to the amount of black bag waste permitted.

Exceptions to the rules will be made over the Christmas and New Year period.

Large families and households disposing of ash which cannot be recycled may also be exempt.

The number of recycling bags per household will remain unlimited.

Here's a guide on what can be recycled, what can't and where you should take it.

A search engine , which will be updated by the council, has also been launched to help find out what to do with items not on the list below.
