Stiff opposition: Residents of Nanar village in Ratnagiri district stage a protest against the proposed oil refinery project.

Shiv Sena ministers have urged Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to cancel the proposed oil refinery project at Nanar village in Konkan to avoid a situation like the one in Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi, where 13 anti-Sterlite protesters died in police firing, last month.

A letter signed by Industries Minister Subhash Desai, Environment Minister Ramdas Kadam, Transport Minister Divakar Raote, and Health Minister Deepak Sawant was submitted to Mr. Fadnavis on Tuesday.

“An unfortunate incident like Thoothukudi should not be repeated in Maharashtra, and the Sena is of the firm belief that timely action is required for it,” the letter said.

It said Mr. Desai had decided to cancel the notification to acquire land for the project and instructed the industries secretary to present a proposal. “The secretary informed us that he had presented the file seeking permission for the cancellation to you. We request you to kindly approve the proposal.”

The letter claimed the locals are against the project, while all grampanchayats have passed resolutions against it.
