PUNE: The 19-mm rainfall in Pune notwithstanding, till late evening on Wednesday, the southwest
monsoon had not officially entered
Maharashtra. It is, however, poised to enter the state’s South
Konkan region in the next 24 hours.
What Pune received on Wednesday evening was a pre-monsoon spell of shower that lasted 45 minutes. Between 8.30 am on Tuesday and 8.30 am on Wednesday, several other stations in Maharashtra reported rainfall.
AK Srivastava, the head of the climate monitoring and analysis group at IMD, said that monsoon is likely to enter South Konkan during the next 24-hour period.
“There is a likelihood of the monsoon entering Pune on Thursday or Friday, but rainfall statistics will determine that. To announce the monsoon’s entry into the state, meteorologists will have to assess which places have received what quantum of rain. This is because monsoon advance depends on spatial continuity of rain. Winds from the Arabian Sea have already entered,” he said.
Srivastava added that the rains on Wednesday were caused by a system over the Arabian Sea towards south-central Maharashtra.
IMD said the conditions are favourable for further advance of the southwest monsoon into more parts of central Arabian Sea, some parts of south Konkan-Goa region, the remaining parts of Karnataka and Rayalaseema, some parts of Telangana, some more parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh and west-central Bay of Bengal in the next 24 hours. It said the conditions are likely to become favourable for further advance of the monsoon into more parts of Maharashtra, Telangana, coastal Andhra Pradesh in the subsequent 48 hours. Conditions are also likely to become favourable for its advance into most parts of the Arabian Sea and remaining parts of Maharashtra between June 9 and June 11.
Widespread rainfall activity is likely to occur in Konkan, central Maharashtra and Marathwada on June 7-8. Pune too is expected to experience rain and thundershowers over the next few days.
