NEW DELHI: A Toyota Fortuner car belonging to a Gurugram-based businessman was stolen from outside a five-star hotel in Chanakyapuri on Wednesday night.
According to the owner of the vehicle, Surender Singh, the incident took place around 11pm when he asked his driver, Delip, to park the car on the road outside the hotel after dropping him at the porch.
An hour later, when Singh returned and called Delip on his mobile phone, he found it switched off.
After inquiring with other drivers and the hotel security, he found that Delip had taken the car out.
Singh said that Delip returned home on Thursday morning and was partially inebriated. “He said that while he was waiting in the car, a few men approached him and offered him soft drinks. He claimed to have fallen unconscious after drinking the beverage,” said Singh.
Delip claimed that a few men had boarded his car and drove around with him for a few hours before dumping him near the hotel. He managed to reach Gurgaon and report back to his employer the next day.
DCP (New Delhi) Madhur Verma said that a case of theft had been registered based on the preliminary inquiry, before Delip had reached home. “The driver’s statement is being recorded and would be verified. We are probing into all possible angles behind the incident,” said DCP Verma.
Police sources, however, said that Delip would be questioned further since some of his statements were found to be contradictory.
