Cut-off at 126 marks, two Pune boys in top 50 in JEE Advanced
Pune: Anuj Srivastava and Arjun Kashettiwar emerged as the probable toppers with first and second ranks in the city in the joint entrance examination (JEE) Advanced results for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT). They were among the top 50 students in the country.
The cut-offs this year was at 126, but the number of ranks declared by IIT Kharagpur reduced from 50,000 last year to 18,000 this year for the over 11,000 IIT seats in the country.

About 1.55 lakh students appeared for JEE Advanced on May 20 across India of whom about 1,200 students are estimated to be from Pune. The cut-off for JEE Advanced has been declared as 126 marks which is 35% of total marks and same as 2017 exam.
Durgesh Mangeshkar, director of IIT Pratishthan, said, “This is the first time in 58 years that the IIT exam was administered online and 40% of the marks were of the new pattern of numerical value questions. The accuracy required in numerical value questions was 25 times more than the accuracy needed in integer type questions pattern which was prevalent from 2006 till 2017. These peculiar aspects have caused about 12% drop in marks required for a particular rank this year as compared to 2017. The number of ranks declared this year has been drastically reduced to almost one-third from 50,000 in 2017 to 18,138 in 2018.”
IIT-P had ten students securing ranks under 2000 from all categories put together. The topper from this coaching class was Advait Padaval with a merit list rank of 428 and Ayush Dahale with a rank of 1942.
This is also the first year when a 14% girls quota on a supernumerary basis has been reserved and hence more girl students are likely to have ranks during the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling process.

The JEE Advanced scores are considered for admission to the 23 IITs which have 11,279 seats and also accepted by Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research and few other colleges in the country.
From Bakliwal Tutorials, as many as 24 students received ranks in the top 2000, Vaibhav Bakliwal, founder of the coaching class said. Arnhav Datar was the top ranked student from Bakliwal Tutorials who figured 200th in the merit list.
The top two students from Pune, Anuj Srivastava, ranked 25 and Arjun Kashettiwar, ranked 33 did their JEE preparation from FIITJEE. The FIITJEE Swargate Centre head VNV Hanuman said, “The success of students is not just measured by ranks or selections. It is also reflected by their traits, attitude and inquisitive minds, elements that students imbibe in their personality development during the process of FIITJEE training.”
From Prime Academy, Mukta Wagle secured 812 rank. Lalit Kumar, CMD of the academy, said, “This year, all coaching classes will see less number of students who qualified JEE Advanced as overall qualifiers have gone down. From Prime, around 50 students qualified.”
