NEW DELHI: A medical board of six AIIMS doctors performed autopsies of the bodies of the criminals killed in Saturday’s encounter in Chhatarpur. The postmortems went on for 12 hours after which the bodies were handed over to the families. Their clothes will be examined on Wednesday.
While the official report will be available by next week, sources said two of the criminals had eight-nine bullet injuries each, while two others were hit by four-five bullets.
Most of the wounds were at the front and on the sides.
After refusing to claim gangster Rajesh Bharti’s body initially, his uncle and elder brother came on Tuesday with elders from Kandela village in Jind. While the locals chose to remain silent on Bharti’s past, they alleged foul play in the recent incident.
The family had earlier told cops that they had disowned him years ago. “He was been in touch with us for many years and we only used to get his news through his activities. Nobody tried to contact him either,” Bharti’s cousin, Dharamvir, said.
Relatives of Umesh alias Don said he had fallen into bad company after the death of his father 10 years ago. Umesh’s maternal uncle, who came to collect the body, said now only his mother and ailing grandmother were left in the family.
For the past two years, Umesh hadn’t come home. “There was no one to guide him after his father’s death. The family has some properties in Gurgaon but now all is lost,” he said, adding that Umesh’s mother is yet to be told about his death.
Family members of Sanjeet Vidrohi, who had just turned 18, lamented that his short temper had driven him to crime. “He was the main hitman of Bharti and considered him like an elder brother,” a relative said.
Viresh Rana’s relatives, however, feigned ignorance about his criminal links. “He might have gone there with those gangsters just as a driver,” said Rana’s uncle, Satveer Dabas. Rana was a graduate and was sending money to his parents every month, he added.
