MUMBAI: Even as Beed constable Lalit Salve left St George's Hospital around 1pm on Tuesday, the hospital authorities announced that they would now on hold a weekly gender reassignment clinic, the first for a state-run hospital.
"Salve has done well after the genital reconstruction surgery and is scheduled to return for the next surgery roughly six months later," said St George's Hospital medical superintendent Dr Madhukar Gaikwad.
He said the hospital is so enthused with the public response to Salve's surgery that next week onwards, it will hold weekly clinics for transgenders seeking sex change operation as well as a cosmetology clinic.
Salve, who fought a four-year battle for holiday to undergo surgery, underwent the first instalment of the reassignment surgery a fortnight back. He was scheduled to leave on Friday, but his family had a tough time arranging for a vehicle that would allow him to lay down for most of the road travel to Beed. There was also a hospital bill of Rs 11,000, but the hospital's social workers managed to get a donation for the same. The hospital has promised to perform Salve's entire treatment, spanning 18 to 24 months, for free. tnn
