SASARAM: Making a scathing attack on the state mines and geology department, Rohtas SP Satyaveer Singh on Tuesday said that checkposts set up by the state government to check illegal sand mining have turned into extortion points and are being manned by the mafia.
“An FIR has been lodged against the district mining officer and six others after a private party was found manning a checkpost near the sand mining ghat, which indicates the involvement of the officer in illegal mining.
The FIR was lodged on the written statement of Dalmia police station SHO Dhiraj Kumar,” said the SP.
No officer of the mines department has ever turned up in any police station in the district to lodge an FIR after overloaded sand-laden heavy vehicles are seized despite repeated requests. Finding no other option, police here are forced to lodge FIRs, added the SP.
“I have also apprised the Rohtas DM about the irregularities and I will soon shoot a letter to the state government about the nexus prevailing here between the mafia and the department concerned. Moreover, unabated illegal mining is also creating hurdles for the district police in discharging its preliminary duty of maintaining law and order,” added Singh.
Sources added that attacks on policemen by mafia to release their seized vehicles have become a routine affair in the district.
