NEW DELHI: A 32-year-old man was thrashed to death by four brothers when their sister complained of being harassed by him on a regular basis. Three of them were arrested.
The incident occurred in outer Delhi’s Kanjhawala on Tuesday. Police said the incident came to light when neighbours heard the victim, Shailender, crying for help. They alerted the police after which a team was spent to the spot. Shailender was rushed to a hospital where he was declared brought dead.
Meanwhile, all the assailants had fled the scene.
Shailender was the brother-in-law of one of his killers. Additional DCP (outer) Rajender Singh Sagar said a team led by SHO Kanjhawala Nageen Kaushik was formed to crack the case and track the accused men. They were identified as Raju (32), Suresh (27), Hemraj (26) and Ravi (22).
Raju, Suresh and Hemraj were arrested while they were trying to flee from the city, but Ravi managed to get away. During interrogation, the trio told the police that Shailender used to live at their house for a couple of months last year. But he was asked to move out because the sister of the youths felt uncomfortable with his presence in the house.
After that, Shailender tried to maintain a cordial relationship with the men and often visited them at their house. But the brothers claimed Shailender misbehaved with and harassed their sister in every visit. They said they had warned him not to come again.
On Tuesday, Shailender went to a market where he passed lewd comments at an elderly woman who had come there for shopping. Seeing this, a few locals slapped him. Raju who was present there intervened and brought Shailender to his house. There they had a tiff and all four dragged him to a room where they thrashed him with a stick and belts till he dropped down unconscious.
The trio said they couldn’t tolerate Shailender troubling their sister and misbehaving with other women and deemed it their duty to teach him a lesson. But they said they didn’t want to kill him.
