PATNA: The death toll in the incident of burning an entire family in Katihar increased to four on Saturday after Panjam Das (40) died at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital (JNMCH) in Bhagalpur on Saturday.
Panjam along with his wife Manjula Devi (35) and two daughters Preeti Kumari (3) and Kiran Kumari (one-and-a-half-year-old) were burned inside their hut after pouring petrol at village Ghordah at Shalmari outpost under Azamnagar police station area in the district on intervening night of June 10 and June 11 while they were fast asleep.

Panjam had somehow managed to bring out his physically challenged wife out of the burning hut but he had failed to rescue his two daughters.
While Preeti and Kiran were charred to death Manjula and Panjam had received severe burn injuries. Manjula had also succumbed to her burn injuries two days after the incident.
Katihar SP Vikash Kumar said that police received information on Saturday that Panjam also died during treatment at Bhagalpur.
“He was severely injured along with his wife. On his statement only, an FIR was lodged with Azamnagar police station in connection with the incident in which a couple Abdul Rahman (35) and Mokeem Akhtari (32) were arrested on June 11 and were sent to jail,” he said adding no more arresting were made as Panjam had not named anyone else behind the incident.
“It is evident from the investigation that land dispute was the lone reason behind the gruesome incident,” he said.
Police said Panjam and his family were living on a piece of land which was sold to Abdul by a female while her brothers including Badri Thakur also used to claim ownership on it. “Abdul allegedly burned Panjam’s family after he had failed to get him evicted,” sources said.
