Thoothukudi protests: Tamil actor Nilani arrested

A woman television artist, who made some critical comments on Facebook in May against the police after the firing on anti-Sterlite protesters in Thoothukudi, was arrested by the Vadapalani police in Coonoor on Wednesday.

Clad in police uniform, actor Nilani, who dons the role of an Assistant Commissioner of Police in a TV serial, had circulated a video asking people to come forward in large numbers and protest against the crackdown.

The clip went viral on social media as many people thought that she was a uniformed officer.

Impersonation charge

Based on a complaint, the Vadapalani police booked a case against her under Sections 419 (Punishment for cheating by personation), 153 (Wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot) and 500 (Punishment for defamation) of the Indian Penal Code and 66 D (Punishment for cheating by personation by using computer resource) of the Information Technology Act.
