Heavy rain that has been lashing the district for the past three days has inundated low-lying areas.

Floodwater has left more than 20 houses marooned. Many areas are under water. Various parts of the city witnessed heavy traffic blocks following rain. Unscientific construction of drainages has caused the flooding, residents allege. Encroachment on drains add to the woes.

Aquatic complex lane is among the worst affected. Water from drainage canals in Vadakkechira and Shoranur road have been diverted to canals in the aquatic complex area, leading to waterlogging there. Floodwater and garbage enter houses, making life miserable.

The areas around Ashwini Hospital is flooded where the situation was similar a few days ago too.

Though the residents approached the Corporation authorities for a solution, no steps have been taken so far, they allege.

Flooding has also been been reported from Avenue Road, Punkunnam, and railway station areas.

Meanwhile, rain claimed two lives in the district. A six-year-old boy drowned in floodwater at Pazhayannur village. Alshad, son of Faizal Kumbalangode, was playing in front of his house when he fell into the floodwater. 64-year-old Vijaya of Kaniyarkode drowned in a river.

Many houses were damaged as uprooted trees fell on them.
