SASARAM/PATNA: A Bihar police driver with patrol gypsy of Durgawati police station in Kaimur district was detained by Uttar Pradesh (UP) police for at least four hours on Friday night for allegedly extorting money from drivers of sand-laden trucks.
The vehicle was detained by Sayedraza police in Chandauli district. Sayedraza police station SHO Surendra Pratap Singh told TOI over the phone that the detained driver was identified as Parwez Khan, who was hired on contract by Bihar police.
“One sub-inspector (SI) and at least two constables of the patrolling team fled when they saw UP police approaching them,” he said.
“Police had received complaints around 7.30pm that a Bihar police team was extorting money from truck drivers transporting sand to UP. The raid was conducted based on the complaints,” Singh said.
He said Rs1,800 was recovered from Khan. The gypsy had registration number BR-45P-7501. He said Khan was detained and quizzed for at least four hours. “He failed to explain about the money recovered from him,” Singh said.
“Prima facie, the allegations seem to be true. Bihar police team was well aware that it had entered UP as even the bridge on river Karmanasa falls under Sayedraza police station jurisdiction,” he said.
Singh said he later spoke to Dugawati police station SHO Alok Kumar over the phone. “Kumar said he was aware of patrolling in the area, but did not know the policemen had crossed the state border,” Singh said.
Singh said no FIR was lodged. Khan with gypsy was set free at around midnight after making a station diary entry.
When asked, Durgawati SHO denied the extortion charge. “The team led by SI Upendra Kumar Yadav was clearing traffic and perhaps inadvertently crossed over the border,” he said.
Kaimur SP Mohammad Faroguddin said an inquiry was ordered in the matter. “Action will be taken after getting the probe report,” he added.
