Vadodara: The Class 9 student found murdered in the washroom of a school in Vadodara was killed by a senior student who wanted to defame the educational institute, the police said.

The Class 10 student did not even know the victim, who was a year junior to him and who had taken admission in the school in Baranpora area only a week ago, news agency PTI said.

The Vadodara police had initially said it was a "fight between two students" which had led to the "gruesome attack". They zeroed in on the 17-year-old after he was spotted in the school's CCTV footage entering the washroom along with the younger boy.

The Class 9 student was found dead at the washroom of the school on Friday. He was stabbed in the stomach at least 10 times, the police said. The postmortem report is yet to come.

Last year, a seven-year-old was found murdered at a school in Gurgaon, near Delhi. The incident
evoked nationwide outrage, following which the case was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation, which arrested a senior student. The agency said he had killed the child to shut down the school and postpone examinations. The body of the seven-year-old was found outside the school washroom last September, his throat was slit.

The 17-year-old has been held under the Juvenile Justice Act. Jagruti Pandya, chairperson of the Gujarat State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, said his mental condition will be examined to know what prompted him to allegedly kill his junior.

The teen arrested in the Gurgaon murder case will be tried as an adult, the Juvenile Justice Board had said after questioning him. He is currently awaiting trial.

The murdered boy's family had alleged that some boys had stabbed him 'during lunch break". The principal said the murder had taken place when the senior students, who attend the school in the afternoon, came in. The body was found around noon.

Sharp weapons and a bottle carrying chilli powder were found in a schoolbag lying near a temple not far from the school. Senior police officer RS Bhagora said they suspected that the accused left the bag there after the murder.

The teenager was a new student - he had joined the school a week ago and was staying with his maternal uncle. His parents live in Gujarat's Anand town, the police said.
