WARANGAL/KARIMNAGAR: Warangal city, which is being projected as the future destination after Hyderabad and Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao himself sanctioning a special fund of Rs 300 crore for its development every year, failed to improve its ranking in ‘Swachh Survekshan 2018’.
In fact, it slipped to 31 from last year’s ranking of 28. On the other hand, Karimnagar Municipal Corporation improved its ranking from 201 to 73 this year.
Warangal city, which ranked 32 in 2016 among 73 cities and 28 among 500 cities and towns, was hoping to improve its ranking this time. In fact, Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC) officials even claimed that the city would get rank below 20 this time.
However, despite slipping down in ranking, the corporation officials claim that 31 was a good rank as this time 4,000 cities and towns, including 485 of them with over 1 lakh population took part in the competition. The officials stated that Hyderabad ranked 27 in the Swachh Survekshan with 3,092 marks, which is just 47 more than Warangal city.
Meanwhile, GWMC commissioner VP Gautam expressed satisfaction over the performances of the corporation and urged his men to work more effectively to improve ranking. “Ranking 31 among 485 cities over 1 lakh population is an achievement. We will work on our shortcomings to improve our position next time,” he claimed.
According to him, poor performance in the solid waste management is to be the main reason behind the drop in the rankings. “Our officials have already visited Indore and Mysore cities to study waste processing system and other methods for effective solid waste management. We would be improving the situation in the coming days,” he said.
Even Warangal urban collector Amrapali Kata had expressed satisfaction over the ranking and congratulated all the officials involved in the entire exercise.
Karimnagar Happy With Performance
Meanwhile, Municipal Corporation of Karimnagar (MCK) officials are upbeat with their ranking. An overjoyed MCK commissioner K Shashanka stated that the corporation with its various initiatives could improve the ranking. “Our hard work paid off. We would be working harder to improve the city ranking next year,” he said. Mayor S Ravinder Singh too hoped that Karimnagar town would improve its ranking in 2019.
