BELAGAVI: An alert security guard on Monday thwarted an attempt by a group of people to bury an infant alive at a graveyard in Shahapur of Belagavi. The incident took place in Shahapur on Saturday but came to light on Tuesday. Speaking to Express, Rajesh Banch, the watchman of the graveyard, said two youths approached him at 11 am and told him to dig a pit to bury a two-month-old infant who had died.

At around 1.15 pm, five to six women and about 10 men reached the graveyard along with the child. He saw that the infant was packed tightly in a cloth and when he tried to loosen it, he found it moving. Shocked, he told the people that the infant was alive and why they had brought it to him.

He was told that the doctors had said the child was suffering from a brain haemorrhage and was as good as dead. Not convinced by their response, he denied burying the live infant. He informed about the same to

Vijay Sawant, a member of the graveyard trust, said Banch.
Sawant enquired about the mother of the baby and was told that she was in the car. He took the infant to the car and handed it to a woman who was crying. He asked the woman to feed the infant. When she did, it opened its eyes and started looking around. The duo asked the people to once again go to the doctor. They said the infant was healthy.

Later, after about an hour those people returned and said the doctors had confirmed that the child was suffering from deadly disease and is equal to death. However, Banch again refused to bury the child. They waited for about half-an-hour in the graveyard along with the infant and later disappeared.
