Ambedkar statue vandalized in UP's Azamgarh
VARANASI: A statue of dalit icon BR Ambedkar was found damaged at Raja Patti village under Kaptanganj police station area of Azamgarh district on Saturday. Police replaced the statue immediately with a new one. Similar incident had occurred at the same place on March 10. Police had arrested a man for damaging the statue.
According to reports, the local residents noticed the desecrated statue on Saturday and informed the police.
Taking prompt action, the police managed to replace the damaged statue with a new one. Police said that no case has been lodged in this regard, as no one was there to register a complaint.
The Kaptanganj inspector Deenanath Pandey told TOI over phone that the Ambedkar statue is situated at a deserted place, and rarely visited by local residents. Similar incident happened in the past too. Some anti-social elements had also damaged the statue at the same place on March 10, said Pandey, adding that he himself got the damaged statue replaced immediately. Ram Awadh Ram, a local, was arrested in this connection.
