Hyderabad: A lower court in Andhra Pradesh sentenced a man for life for killing his son-in-law. The reason was that the victim had visited his daughter during an “inauspicious” period.

The second additional district session court in Amalapuram (East Godavari district) found L Akkiraju guilty of murdering his son-in-law Satti Babu. The judge also imposed a fine of Rs2,000 (Dh107) on him.

Alampuram rural police station had arrested Akkiraju on the complaint of his daughter Durga Bhavani and booked a case of murder against him. Police said Durga Bhavani had married Satti Babu in 2015 and a few months later her father killed his son-in-law as he was furious with Sattibabu visiting his home to meet Durga Bhavani during the “Ashad” month, an inauspicious period in the Hindu calendar. The shocking incident had occurred on July 9, 2015 after Akki Raju had warned his son law many times not to visit his home during the period, police said. Durga Bhavani was staying at her parent’s place in Bhimanapally village at the time.
