Rotherham and Knightsbridge have been named as the worst places to sell a house in the UK, according to new figures.

Homes in both northern working class towns and rich London boroughs take longer to sell than anywhere else in the country, according to a new industry guide compiled by home buyer Quick Move Now and search site Home.co.uk. 

The worst of those can take nearly 279 days to get rid of a house or a flat compared to just 87 days in the quickest-selling regions of Britain such as Rainham, Swindon and Bristol.

Their list of the top 10 worst places to sell include Rotherham, Mayfair, Knightsbridge and Shields.

In Rotherham, the worst of all, it takes an average of 279 days to sell a property followed by 277 in Knightsbridge. 

The top 10 list also includes affluent Mayfair, Marylebone in London and Sunderland as prices start to fall and the buy-to-let market in the capital stagnates.

These periods are the time from going on the market to accepting an offer taking into consideration surveys, conveyancing and other legalities that add days to a deal being completed.

The fastest places in England and Wales for sales were topped by Rainham in Kent, where properties sell after just 87 days on average.

The next three places on the list are Bristol, Strood and Swindon, all selling in average of within 90 days. 

'The longer a property spends on the market, the more likely it is to end up being sold for less than the asking price,' said Quick Move Now director Danny Luke.

Homes that sell in just two weeks will get their asking price, after four weeks it drops to around 98 per cent of the asking price, then to 96 per cent after eight weeks and below 94% after three months.

Luke said: 'Historically, there has generally been a clear north-south divide between the best and worst places to sell.

'However, that divide seems to be a thing of the past. Even London's once seemingly untouchable market is suffering.'

Homes selling for millions in more affluent areas like Knightsbridge have seen prices fall and stabilise because of tighter tax regulations and the current economic uncertainty, meaning these homes are much less likely to sell quickly.
