BEAUTY CLINIC: Stop your make-up melting!

Jo and Sarah answer real questions from readers: to put your query, go to beautybible.com

Q I’m desperately seeking a make-up fixing spray to stop those melting moments in this heat wave. It’s for a family wedding and I don't want to look like a lobster under my hat...

A We know the feeling! For top tips for this dilemma, we turned to Armand Beasley, make-up artist and beauty presenter (armandinternationalltd.com).

Armand says that ‘the key to make-up longevity, especially when you have a long day ahead, is to help control shine’. Armand’s go-to product is Urban Decay All Nighter Long Lasting Makeup Setting Spray, £24 for 118 ml which is oil- and paraben-free. Shake it well, hold about eight inches from your face and spray as directed.

‘This product has been formulated with something called “Temperature Control Technology” which helps lower the temperature of the surface make-up,’ Armand says. In his experience it can help your look last with no resemblance to a lobster for up to 16 hours.

If you tend to have an oily skin type, Armand suggests trying their DeSlick Setting Spray, £24 for 118 ml, for a more matte finish. You can also spray this on your eyeshadow brush/es before applying eye make-up. ‘This can help prevent the eyeshadow creasing on your eyelids,’ he says.

The products also come in convenient travel sizes. Urban Decay All Nighter Long Lasting Makeup Setting Spray and DeSlick Setting Spray are both £10 for 30 ml.

Another option to minimise shine as well as provide some sun protection is Inika Organics Loose Mineral Foundation, £30, which gives an SPF25 and comes in 12 shades. ‘Load a kabuki brush and buff it on for a flawless finish; you can use it on its own or as a finishing product,’ recommends Armand. You can top this up through the day as needed, especially if you are in the sun (as opposed to a cool church or other venue).

Finally, Armand who’s often asked to be the make-up artist for celebrity weddings says his top tip for rapid cooling is to hold a glass filled with ice cubes between your wrists. ‘It’s guaranteed to bring down your body temperature quickly!’

A last thought from us: we love the all-natural Dr. Hauschka Facial Toner, around £25.50 for 100 ml, to refresh our complexions in this weather; plus it’s a great setting spray for make-up, we find.

Elizabeth and James Nirvana Rose Dry Shampoo

Elizabeth and James Nirvana Rose Dry Shampoo

Beauty Bible loves…

Elizabeth and James Nirvana Rose Dry Shampoo, £25 for 200 ml. This is not your average dry shampoo. Most definitely suitable for glamping, rather than simply camping, we think this belongs in this summer’s most fashionable festival yurts.

We’re incredibly impressed by the Elizabeth and James Nirvana fragrance collection, which is the somewhat unexpectedly sophisticated creation of former child actors Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen (a.k.a. ‘The Olsen Twins’), who’ve now turned fashion designers.

The shake-and-spritz formula really is brilliantly oil-absorbing and oomph-boosting, and doesn’t flake. We’re already converts to the smoulderingly rich-scented Elizabeth and James Nirvana Black Dry Shampoo, which we discovered last year – but for summer 2018, we’ll be packing the blooming lovely Nirvana Rose option: a deep, dark, smouldering nose blending notes of rose de Maï, geranium and vetiver.

Port Eliot, Latitude and Bestival surely never smelled so good…
