The Nilgiris, the largest tea growing district in South India, received good rains in June helping increased harvest of green leaf and hence the manufacture of black tea.
Tea Companies in the district have informed the Tea Board that their production in June rose to 1.81 mkg from 1.51 mkg in June 2017, posting a gain of 14.56 per cent.
The normal production for the month as measured by the five-year mean was 1.69 mkg. This meant that this year’s output in June was 7.10 per cent more than the normal.
However, due to lower crop in earlier months, the cumulative production in the first half of 2018 was 0.25 mkg less at eight mkg, marking a fall of 3.03 per cent over Jan-June 2017.
The five-year mean was 7.44 mkg which meant that this year’s first half turned out a production that was 7.53 per cent more than normal.
