A record-busting iceberg weighing in at nearly 10 millions tons has been snapped floating off the coast of Greenland.

It's so big residents of nearby village have had to be evacuated after the floating menace came within 100 metres from the shore.

There are even fears the iceberg could break up and cause a massive tsunami, washing away parts of the town.

Eye-popping photos show the floating glacier hovering over the tiny village of Innaarsuit in northwest Greenland.

On Thursday it came stunningly close to the town which is reportedly home to just 169 people - 33 of whom have been evacuated.

Keld Quistgaard from the Danish Meteorological Institute told Danish TV the berg weighs 8 million to 10 million tons and rises nearly 300 feet in the air above the water.

It's so big it is even visible from space.

A photo taken by Sentinel-2A - a satellite owned by the European Space Agency (ESA) on July 9 captured the berg perilously close to the town.

Several other large bergs are also floating nearby.

Susanna Eliassen, a member of the village council in Innaarsuit, told local media in Greenland she had never seen an iceberg as big as this one before - despite the blocks of ice being a common sight around shorelines in the country.

At the weekend the berg had moved further away from the shore line off Innaarsuit, but the town isn't yet out of the danger zone.

The town's power plant is reportedly on the coast and there are fears if the berg breaks up it could flood the plant and cause it to shut down.

Officials are hoping southerly winds and favourable weather will move the iceberg off the coast.

According to local media, a Danish Royal Navy ship is standing by should the residents need help.
