NORTH LAUDERDALE, FLA. (WSVN) - New surveillance video has been released showing the moments leading up to the fatal shooting of a store owner in North Lauderdale.
Sixty-one-year-old Ayub Ali was shot and killed during a robbery outside Aunt Molly’s Food Store, near Southwest 17th Street and South State Road 7, on July 17.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office released surveillance video showing a man they believe is the killer.
The footage shows a man sporting a beanie with “Miami” stitched on the front as he walked into the store and confronted Ali at the cash register.
“They take the money and take him to the office room,” said Kazi Hayder, who’s also a clerk at the store as well as a longtime friend of the victim.
Surveillance video showed the two walking to the back room before reemerging a few seconds after.
The robber managed to escape with money from the register only to return a short time later.
Investigators said the man then took Ali back to the office and shot him.
Tamarac Fire Rescue transported Ali to Broward Health Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
BSO detectives are looking for the man seen in the video wearing a black vest, striped red shorts and red slides.
A makeshift memorial now decorates the front of the convenience store. Family and friends left flowers and candles in his honor.
“He’s my friend last 20-40 years, we had come at the same time to this country,” said Hayder. “Everybody knew him, everybody cried. You see the flower, you see the candle outside.”
“I’ve been to his house. I know his wife, all his kids. It just feels strange. I’m waiting for him to come through the door, and he’ll never come,” said Louis Bradley, a friend of the victim, before adding some harsh words about the killer. “He ain’t got no soul, no heart. He’s a coward.”
