Heavy rain in coastal districts for 48 hrs

For the next 48 hours, coastal Andhra Pradesh will receive heavy to very heavy rainfall as the Southwest monsoon has been active over it and weak over Rayalaseema.

VIJAYAWADA: For the next 48 hours, coastal Andhra Pradesh will receive heavy to very heavy rainfall as the Southwest monsoon has been active over it and weak over Rayalaseema. Rainfall has occurred in coastal districts of the State and isolated places in Rayalaseema since Thursday. IMD warns of heavy rainfall in north coastal Andhra Pradesh due to the low pressure over Bay of Bengal which is likely to concentrate into a depression during the next 48 hours.

According to the officials of State Disaster Management Authority, the low-pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal and Odisha coasts has become strong and lies over the same area with associated cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6 km above mean sea level tilting southwestwards with height.

Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, East Godavari and West Godavari will be impacted because of this as the sea is going to be harsh and high tide alerts have been issued along the coastal line. Fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea.

Under the impact of low pressure, many areas in the Srikakulam district received mild to moderate rain. When compared to Palakonda and Srikakulam divisions, Tekkali division received more rain. As much as 44mm rainfall was registered in Palasa, 43.6mm in Kaviti, 42.6 in Kanchili, 40.2 in Mandasa and 37.8 mm in Nandigam mandals on Friday morning. Because of incessant rains, three gates were lifted up to 0.20 metres at Gotta barrage. Although the inflow increased to 4,447 cusecs, the outflow of water was also increased to 3,580 cusecs. As much as 113.6 mm rainfall was registered in upper catchment areas of the Vamsadhara river in Odisha.

Keeping in mind the incident in which over 50 workers were stranded at Purushothapuram sand reach in Vamsadhara river, district collector on Friday strictly instructed all officials to tell people to stay off the rivers and the canals.

A control room was set up at the collectorate.  It can be contacted on 08942-240557. IMD INSAT 3D satellite images and DWR observations stated, moderate to heavy rain may occur at isolated places over Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam and East Godavari Districts. Meanwhile, light to moderate rain may occur at isolated places in the West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam and Nellore districts and very light to light rain may occur at isolated places over Rayalaseema.
