Venkateswara Rao, a differently-abled person, till sometime back used to struggle to eke out a living and was dependent on his parents even for his pocket money. Now, he is a proud owner of a mobile phone shop-cum-service centre, thanks to the training he has undergone at the Rural Development and Self-Employment Training (RUDSET) Institute on repairing mobile phones.

Basic qualifications

“I used to feel bad to ask for money from my parents. But now, I am chipping in with my contributions to run the family,” says the youth, after clearing the test designed by the National Bank for Rural Development and Agriculture during the free mobile workshop held at Malakonda, near Kandukur in Prakasam district.

“We have trained more than 2,500 unemployed youth, including a good number of differently-abled persons and also women in mobile phone repairing at the RUDSETI here,” says its executive director M.Janardhan.

The trainees are selected after assessing their aptitude for the course which covers imparting knowledge of hardware and software relating to mobile phones with touch screen, explains RUDSETI director Gudivada Suryanarayana Murthy.

Unemployed youth with some understanding of computers can enrol their names for the month-long course, adds RUDSETI course instructor I. Rajasekhar Reddy.

“Most of my students coming from BPL families are now successfully running mobile phone repairing centres across Prakasam district and elsewhere,” adds Mr. Rajasekhara Reddy, with a sense of satisfaction.

Students hailing from the below poverty line families are provided training free of charge with the Union government bearing the training expense of ₹500 per day per student, says Mr.Murthy, who has come on deputation to RUDSETI from the Canara Bank. Successful trainees are earning on an average ₹25,000 per month in places like Singarayakonda, Kandukur, Addanki, Chirala and Ongole. Some of them even earn up to ₹75,000 per month, he adds.
