PATNA: A newborn baby girl miraculously escaped unhurt while six others, including her mother, died in a car accident near Lahila village under the Sikandara police station area in Jamui district at around 1am on Friday.
The car in which they were travelling rammed into a truck parked on the NH-333A roadside near Lahila. The deceased were identified as Niwas Panday (48) and his wife Seema Devi (46), their daughter Archana Kumari (25), their neighbour Savitri Devi (55), ASHA worker Anjana Kumari (40) and card driver Vipul Kumar (40).

While Anjana belonged to Gaura, others were from Tarhari village, both under the Hilsa police station area in Lakhisarai district.
Sikandara SHO Pramod Kumar said the six died on the spot. When the villagers reached the spot, they heard the newborn crying. “The infant is Archana’s daughter and born two-three days back at Tarhari. They were going from Lakhisarai to Jamui sadar hospital for Archana’s treatment when the accident took place,” he said.
Kumar said the infant had fallen between the front and rear seats of the car. “Police reached at the spot and rushed the infant to the sadar hospital. Doctors said she escaped unhurt in the accident,” he said.
The SHO said the bodies could be pulled out of the mangled car after making efforts for several hours.
Jamui sadar SDPO Ram Pukar Singh said preliminary investigations suggested that the driver had not slept for the last two to three days. “Perhaps he slept behind the wheel. There was also poor visibility on the highway due to overnight rain in the area. Both the factors seem to have resulted in the accident,” Singh said.
He said the bodies were handed over to the family members after postmortem and the process for disbursing Rs4 lakh ex gratia to the next of kin of each deceased was also initiated.
