NEW DELHI: A building in J-block of Kalkaji has been evicted by South Delhi Municipal Corporation on Saturday after the residents complained of cracks on it. Senior officials claimed that the building has even tilted a bit.
The four-storey building in the congested colony of Kalkaji DDA flats was constructed a few years ago. While the residents have been evicted, the neighbours said the cracks were spotted suddenly.
“The building has tilted a bit and there are gaps between the walls of two buildings.
This happened suddenly on Friday. The residents had informed the civic officials, who after inspection immediately asked them to move out,” said Deepak, a resident.
Before the onset of monsoon, the civic bodies carry out inspection across their area for dangerous building. However, the inspection is merely eyewash as it is done visually and till date no proper mechanism has been devised to identify them. Senior officials from SDMC claimed that this building was not mentioned in the dangerous building list.
“We will inspect the building to understand the cause of the cracks and gaps. Only after the inspection, it can be decided whether to demolish it or not,” said the official.
SDMC in its survey had concluded that “there were no dangerous buildings in SDMC areas.” However, on June 18, a portion of a wall collapsed in Vishnu Garden, leading to the death of one person and injuring another. On July 23, the roof of a house collapsed in Hari Vihar, killing two people and injuring three of a family.
