VIJAYAWADA: A group of elderly pilgrims getting stuck in a place where they have never been earlier, having exhausted all money and sans any identity proof. That was the situation of Sudarshanamma from Madanapalle, Chitttoor district in Andhra Pradesh, aged 65 years, who got stuck with six other elderly people from her family, all between 60-65 years along with a small child and her mother.

Speaking to Express over phone, Sudarshanamma said, “We left from Madanapalle last week for pilgrimage and have been going to various destinations since the last 5-6 days including  Kedarnath and Badrinath. We were at Gangotri on Sunday. After taking a dip in the river, we realised that we lost some of our luggage which also had our Aadhaar cards and some other identity documents and we have also exhausted all our financial resources. We had no idea how we would go back to our hometown and were in a helpless situation, not knowing whom to approach.”

It was in this situation that a district official saw the group of elderly people seated helplessly and brought them to the office of Ashish Chauhan, District Collector of Uttarkashi. Chauhan said, “One of the ladies who could understand and speak Hindi told me the dire straits they were in.” Chauhan arranged for them to stay in one of the government accommodation and arranged money for them to travel back.
