  • Family members also tore clothes off the woman and cut all her hair off

An Indian couple who were kidnapped at gunpoint and subjected to a degrading assault by the bride's own family, were reportedly attacked as 'punishment' for marrying without permission.

The man, 23, was tied to a pole and beaten up, while his wife, 21, was stripped and had her hair cut off, before they were both forced to drink urine.

The incident took place in Alirajpur, Madhya Pradesh, India, and was recorded and shared online by one of the alleged attackers.

The young couple had grown up in the same village and married in May this year against her family's wishes, according to local media.

The groom had then tried to smooth things over by paying a dowry of two goats and 70,000 rupees (£780) in cash, but this appears to not have sufficed.

They had moved away from the area to look for work, but came back for a visit last week.

'The girl's parents came to know about this and kidnapped them at gunpoint on July 25,' said Vikas Kapis, a local police officer, told NDTV

Members of the bride's family entered the house where they were staying and kidnapped them at gunpoint.

They subjected the pair to the violent and degrading assault, and reportedly told the woman it was revenge for 'hurting the family's pride.'

The couple filed a complaint against her father, two uncles and three other people of unknown relation, of which two people have been arrested.
