HYDERABAD: In yet another instance of human trafficking to the Gulf, a man from Nizamabad district trafficked his wife to Oman and fled to Qatar. The victim, Kamala Anga, 42, had the providence of coming back home after a two-month ordeal at the hands of her kafil (employer) there.
Kamala Anga of Choutupalli village in Kammarpally mandal, Nizamabad was forced to go to Muscat by her husband Kamala Sudarshan and an agent identified as Raju.
She was promised a job, with a salary of Rs 20k. “I had to oblige as my husband is a drunkard and used to beat me. I have had to even borrow money, totally Rs 3 lakh, which I haven’t repaid yet,” Kamala told TOI. Two months ago, she landed in Muscat. Her troubles only got worse after she set foot in Muscat .
“I was deprived of food, water and sleep, and made to work 24/7. The kafil and his wife beat me several times, repeatedly. I called up my husband and pleaded with him to get me back home but he told me to continue working there,” Kamala said. Helpless, she finally told her family and a relative, Venkatesh, of her nightmarish ordeal, He brought the matter to the notice of Telangana Jagruthi general secretary Naveen Achari.
Venkatesh said Raju demanded money to have Kamala return back, and Rs 60,000 was even transferred to his bank account. “But after getting the money, he was inaccessible, and he switched off his mobile,” he said. Kamala said her salary was taken by the agent’s wife who lives in Muscat. Nizamabad MP Kalvakuntla Kavitha helped Kamala return to India on July
27. Owing to her deteriorated health after the ordeal, she took treatment in Hyderabad before going to her village on July 31.
What has now come as a shock to Kamala is her husband fleeing the country. Her family lodged a complaint with Kammarpally police against Sudarshan, after he boarded a flight to Mumbai en route to Qatar.
“Compounding our helplessness, Sudarshan sent me a pic of his flight tickets and a selfie of himself at RGI Airport,” Venkatesh said.
