Chris Hemsworth walks away from Star Trek 4: Reports

By Broede Carmody

Chris Hemsworth has decided to live long and prosper somewhere else.

The Australian actor has reportedly walked away from a deal that would have seen him appear in the fourth Star Trek reboot.

Negotiations between Hemsworth's people and Paramount Pictures have broken down, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Also said to be walking away from the negotiating table is Chris Pine. The American actor was due to reprise the iconic role of Captain Kirk.

Hemsworth was set to play Captain Kirk's father as part of a time-travelling story arc. It was a role the Australian had played before, albeit very briefly in J. J. Abrams' 2009 film.

Sources close to Hemsworth and Paramount told The Hollywood Reporter the negotiations fell apart due to money. The Thor star is said to be asking for a pay cut similar to a big superhero blockbuster. However, the studio doesn't want to part with a godly amount of cash.

The most recent film, Star Trek Beyond,  didn't perform as well at the box office in comparison to its predecessors. It snapped up about $470 million off the back of a $250 million budget.

In comparison, the first movie in the rebooted franchise scooped up about $640 million in ticket sales.

The casting speculation comes after it was revealed Patrick Stewart would return to the Star Trek universe. The 78-year-old actor will once again don the uniform of Captain Picard, but this time for US streaming platform CBS All Access.

The fourth film in the rebooted Star Trek franchise is yet to be given a name or a release date. But it is set to be directed by SJ Clarkson, with Abrams attached to the project as a producer.

It is not yet known whether Paramount will recast Hemsworth and Pine or attempt to lure the Hollywood stars back to the negotiating table.
