What’s killing honeybees?

Despite their social cohesion and impressive skills, honeybees are under threat. In many parts of the world, including the United States, large numbers of colonies have been lost, a phenomenon known as colony collapse disorder.

What’s killing these essential pollinators? Pollution, pesticides, parasites?

Volusia County beekeepers will share their thoughts on the topic from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 18, at the DeLand Regional Library, 130 E. Howry Ave.

Reservations are not required. For information, call 386-822-6430, ext. 20762.

Attract pollinators to your yard

Katie Tripp, a supervisor with the Volusia Soil and Water Conservation District, will offer tips to attract birds and butterflies to your yard during a discussion from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, at Lyonia Environmental Center, 2150 Eustace Ave., Deltona.

Tripp is an avid organic gardener who is passionate about protecting pollinators and supporting efforts to promote locally sourced, sustainable food crops.

The free program will be in the center's classroom. Reservations are required; call 386-789-7207, ext. 21028.
