FLORIDA (FOX NEWS) – A blanket of red tide along Florida’s Gulf Coast that’s killing marine life in addition to emptying normally packed beaches with an unrelenting stench has caused the state’s governor to declare a state of emergency for parts of the region.
Florida Gov. Rick Scott’s declaration covers Collier, Lee, Charlotte, Sarasota, Manatee, Hillsborough and Pinellas counties, which will have “all state resources” deployed to ensure residents are safe and businesses can recover.
“As Southwest Florida and the Tampa Bay area continues to feel the devastating impacts of red tide, we will continue taking an aggressive approach by using all available resources to help our local communities,” Scott, a Republican, said in a statement.
“I am issuing an emergency declaration to provide significant funding and resources to the communities experiencing red tide so we can combat its terrible impacts.”

I called on the CDC to help with the algae & red tide crisis here in Florida. They just wrote back. Said they are ready to help but can’t until the state asks for it. What is going on? Why aren’t state leaders asking for help? This is a real crisis – we need all hands on deck! pic.twitter.com/JY81j8xT3d

You afraid of red tide coming to Tampa Bay beaches? Here’s what we saw today on Anna Maria Island. All beaches open, people in water, north to south. No smell on Gulf side. Different story on inter coastal side. Thousands of dead fish floating and smelly.@TB_Times #flwx #RedTide pic.twitter.com/E7jLi8H0JM
