You can now watch movies while floating in the Downtown Canal

People of the community enjoy the beautiful weather along the canal in downtown Indianapolis on June 28, 2016.

Update: The "Pirates of the Caribbean" screening on Aug. 16 has been moved to Friday, Aug. 24 due to impending thunderstorms. Indy Film Fest said it will honor all in-water experience tickets originally purchased for Aug. 16 on the new date. "Talladega Nights" will still screen Aug. 23. Both films will start at 9 p.m.

You've never clutched a couch cushion while watching Captain Barbossa's legion of the undead chase Jack Sparrow through a deep, dark, moonlit cave, right?

Well, now's your chance to prove it — by watching the siege from an innertube in the Downtown Indianapolis Canal as the sun sinks below the horizon.

An Indy Film Fest and Downtown Indy, Inc. partnership will bring free "Sunset Cinema on the Canal" movies to a screen near the north canal basin Aug. 16 ("Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl") and 23 ("Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby").

Both films are rated PG-13 and will start at dusk, around 9 p.m.

The movie nights are a sequel to last fall's Cabrewing on the Canal event, which brought live music and beer to Indy's central channel.

A bridge over the canal is lit during the IN Light IN, a free Indianapolis Light Festival on the downtown Canal, Friday August 26th, 2016. The two day Interactive light festival celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Indianapolis Foundation, and Central Indiana Community Foundation, in partnership with Northern Lights mn.

“After tremendous success with Yelp’s Cabrewing on the Canal in 2017, we wanted to bring back another in-Canal experience,” Bob Schultz, senior vice president of marketing, communication and events for Downtown Indy, Inc., said. “Thanks to Indy Film Fest, we know this will be a unique event and fun for all attendees.”

For $20, floaters 21 and older can buy an innertube (yes, you get to keep it) and Sun King beer package and take in the Thursday-night flicks while bobbing under the stars. Online preregistration for the in-water experience is required for both dates (Aug. 16 here, and Aug. 23 here), as tubes are limited.

The movies are free for grass-dwelling land-lubbers of all ages (blankets, chairs and picnics encouraged). Attendees can also buy food and soft drinks near Canal 337 from Thomas Caterers.

All proceeds will benefit Indy Film Fest and Downtown beautification.
