Taking a strong note of the Deoria shelter home abuse case, the Uttar Pradesh government on Wednesday transferred Superintendent of Police, Deoria, and Deputy Inspector General of Police, Basti (range), who was posted as SP Deoria between September 2017 and March 2018. A departmental action has also been initiated against the two officials.
The action comes on the heels of an investigation report by the Additional Director General of Police (ADG) Gorakhpur zone on the role of the police officers in the case.
A statement issued by the Principal Secretary (Home) office confirmed that SP, Deoria, Rohan P Kanay and DIG, Basti (range), Rakesh Shankar had been transferred to the DGP office.
SP, Mahoba, N Kolanchi, has been appointed the new SP of Deoria, while DIG Anti-Corruption Org (ACO), Ashutosh Kumar, would take charge as DIG Basti (range), it said.
The statement added that Deoria Sadar circle officer (CO) Dayaram Singh Gaur has also been transferred on grounds of “negligence and lethargy”, and departmental action would be initiated against him.
Suspension order of the investigating officer (IO) of the case — registered on July 31 by the District Probation Officer (DPO) and the in-charge of the concerned police station — has been issued by the DGP office.
A total of 24 girls were rescued from the shelter home in Deoria on August 6 after allegations of their sexual exploitation came to light.
While recommending a CBI inquiry into the matter, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had ordered a probe by a Special Investigative Team (SIT) headed by the ADG Crime. ADG, Gorakhpur (zone), Dawa Sherpa, has also been asked to investigate the role of the policemen in the matter.
