The Nilgiris received good rains in July helping increased harvest of green leaf and hence the manufacture of black tea.
Tea Companies have now informed the Tea Board that their production in July rose to 1.38 million kg (mkg) from 1.21 mkg in July 2017, posting a gain of 14.04 per cent.
The normal production for the month as measured by the five-year mean was 1.30 mkg. This meant that this year’s output in July was 6.15 per cent more than the normal.
Consequently, the cumulative production in the seven months of 2018 rose to 9.38 mkg from 9.26 mkg in the same months of 2017 marking a gain of 1.30 per cent.
The five-year mean production for the seven months was 8.47 mkg which meant that this year’s production so far was 10.74 per cent more than the normal.
