Central Indiana high school football roundup: Week 1

Warren Central High School senior Romeir Elliott (21) breaks out into the Center Grove secondary for a huge touchdown run during the first half of action. Center Grove High School hosted Warren Central High School in IHSAA varsity football action, Friday, Aug. 17, 2018.

Rain didn't dampen spirits for Week 1 of the high school football season. Here's a roundup of Friday's area action.

► Warren Central lived up to its No. 1 ranking, scoring early and holding on late against Center Grove. And David Bell proved he doesn't have to catch touchdowns to make an impact, via Insider Kyle Neddenriep.

► Gregg Doyel watched a high school football coach win his first game at his new school Friday, and then break down into tears of regret. Probably because the coach on the other sideline was his son. A must-read column.

► Bishop Chatard's season-opening win meant a bit more to the Trojans and their fans. Here's why.

► Stifling defense led Decatur Central to a shutout win over the Flashes.

Avon 44, Plainfield 13

In the season opening matchup between Avon and Plainfield, the Orioles displayed just how potent their offense can be in a 44-13 victory. The Orioles made the most of their opportunities through the ground and air early to create separation. Ohio State commit Sampson James got started with a rushing touchdown to set the tone for the rest of the evening despite the Quaker defense showing promise early. Avon quarterback Henry Hesson exploited the Plainfield secondary, displaying his arm talent by throwing two long pass completions for touchdowns to put the Orioles up 21-0 at the half.

Avon returned from halftime starting where it left off. Avon pinned Plainfield by limiting their rush attack causing the Quakers to attempt to find success through the air. Plainfield would eventually score twice late in the second half. A 59-yard touchdown run by Sampson James followed by a touchdown run by Jalen Love proved to be too much for Plainfield. — Justin Byers

Carmel 24, Trinity 21

A strong defense and late-game heroics led Carmel to a 24-21 victory of Trinity (Louisville) Friday night.

Trailing by four points with 1:25 to play, the Greyhounds led by senior quarterback Tyler Trent, marched down the field to score the game-winning touchdown with 28 seconds to play. Trent went 5-of-12 for 59 yards and found Sam Rogers on a slant pass in the end zone for the game-winning score.

“We never got down on ourselves,” Trent said. “This was a total team effort. The defense kept us in the game. The offensive line gave me time, and I found Rogers after he won his route.”

After the game, Carmel coach John Hebert credited the win to a “desire for excellence”.

“I’m so proud of these guys tonight,” he said. “I told them after the game their desire won this game. We aren’t there yet, but this proves we can do it.”

After Carmel turned the ball over in field-goal range late in the game, Hebert never lost confidence.

“I told the guys that even if they get the field goal, it’s a seven-point game. Luckily, they missed. Our offense stalled, but our defense stepped up as they did all game, and the offense stepped up when it mattered.” — Mike Williams

Cathedral 31, Noblesville 7

First-year coach Bill Peebles wasn’t sure what he was going to get when Cathedral took the Lucas Oil Stadium field against Noblesville in Friday’s season opener. By the end of the night, he had a better idea of what the Irish could be this after a 31-7 win over the Millers.

“I thought it was a good win for us,” Peebles said. “I still don’t know how good or not good we can be, but we did some good things and some bad tonight. We still have a lot of room to grow.”

The Irish got things going early in the first as Orin Edwards hit Evan Dawn from 20 yards out. From there the Irish would roll.

Defensively, Noblesville was suffocated all night by the Irish defense. Outside of a broken play late in the half that lead to a long Noblesville touchdown, the Irish were stout and forced two turnovers. — Joe Spears

Hamilton SE 21, Lawrence Central 20

Adam Morris’ debut as Hamilton Southeastern coach won't be one he forgets anytime soon. After failing to convert so many times during the first half, his Royals battled back in the second half to beat Lawrence Central 21-20 in the nightcap at Lucas Oil Stadium.

The Royals scored the game-winning touchdown with 34 seconds remaining and forced their fourth turnover of the night on Lawrence Central’s final effort.

“I can’t believe it,” Morris said. “So many things did not go our way tonight. Our kids just responded and got a stop over and over again. They just kept fighting.”

It was Lawrence Central that got things going early. A pair of red zone touchdown runs by Bryce Anderson quickly put them up 14-0 in the first quarter.

While HSE had plenty of opportunities to get on the scoreboard in the first half, its offense floundered each time.

Things started to turn for the Royals in the second half. Lawrence Central fumbled a punt deep in its own territory and the Royals converted just a few plays later on a short run by Matt Harris.

Lawrence Central would go down a few plays later but the Royals answered in a big way on both sides of the ball to seal the narrow win. — Joe Spears

North Central 31, Fishers 7

North Central used a plethora of offensive weapons in its 31-7 victory over Fishers in its season opener.

The Panthers rallied after their first drive of the game, which ended with a blocked field goal, and scored four touchdowns from four different players in the decisive win.

First on the board was senior quarterback Liam Thompson, who took it in himself on a 14-yard score.

“It’s awesome being able to have so many offensive weapons and the O-line did a great job up front,” Thompson said. “We did our job tonight, so we’ve got to enjoy it this weekend and get ready for next week.”

Big plays, like a 50-yard touchdown pass to Tre’Von Elliott, who also snagged a 51-yard reception later in the game, along with scores from Alex Tarver and Richard Hamilton led to the dominating victory.

Fishers scored its first – and only – touchdown with under 4 minutes remaining in the game on an eight-yard Mason McCartney touchdown catch.  — Robby General

Pike 27, Zionsville 19

Pike capitalized on its opportunities in Friday night’s season opener against Zionsville, pulling off a 27-19 victory.

The win didn’t come easily for the Red Devils. Both teams scored on their first offensive possessions and found the end zone twice in the first half. Despite picking off the Eagles twice, the Red Devils couldn’t close the half with a lead. A pass interference call put the Eagles in field-goal range and gave Zionsville a 16-13 lead late in the second quarter.

Pike took control of the game in the third quarter, however, outscoring Zionsville 14-3 with two touchdowns through the air. After a missed field goal put the game on ice, the Red Devils’ defense bent but never broke, picking off the Eagles for a third time.

“There are a lot of holes we need to patch up, but it’s the first game of the season so that’s expected,” Pike coach Jimmy Graves said. “We’re just happy to come out of today 1-0.”  — Yousef Abdeldaiem

Southport 36, Roncalli 28

Southport used a big spurt late in the game, which included two touchdowns and two interceptions in the fourth quarter, to take the 36-28 win over Class 5A No. 4 Roncalli at home in Friday night’s season opener.

“We’re going to rest on the fact that we went out and beat a really good football team,” Southport coach Brandon Winters said. “It should give us some confidence, and it should give us some motivation, because we feel like if we can beat these guys, we can beat our conference and be successful in our sectional.”

The Cardinals had four interceptions on the night, and they gave up the ball another three times in a back-and-forth game that had five lead changes and two ties.

Roncalli led 14-13 at halftime and took a quick 21-13 lead in the third quarter. Southport didn’t take its second lead of the night until halfway through the fourth quarter, but then never looked back.

The moment fans may remember most came at the end of the first quarter when Southport quarterback Eddie Schott, a Ball State commit, connected with Lucas Willoughby for a 99-yard touchdown pass, the longest such play in school history.
