NEW DELHI: A 23-year-old businessman paid a heavy price for stopping his car and getting out of it late at night at Vivek Vihar in east Delhi. This gave three men the chance to hold him at gunpoint, use his car to drive around and then rob him of his debit cards.
The men let him free around dawn near Shyam Lal College in Shahdara.
The incident happened on Friday night when the complainant, a resident of Jhilmil Colony, was returning home after meeting some friends.
The youth, who runs the family firm dealing with PVC items, told cops that he stopped his car near the DDA community centre in Vivek Vihar to relieve himself.
While returning to his Hyundai i20 car, he was accosted by three men. “They put a gun in my back and told me to quietly sit on the back seat of my car,” the businessman said in his complaint. “They took the Rs 3,700 in cash that I had and held me captive in my own vehicle.”
While one of them took over the steering wheel, the other two made sure that their captive was not able to free himself. They also took his three ATM cards and a gold chain and told him to not to make a fuss.
The trio then drove the car to Usmanpur in northeast Delhi, where a grey Santro car made a rendezvous. Three others, obviously associates of the men who had the businessman in their grip, joined the group. Two of the ATM cards that had been snatched from the man were given to the newcomers, who then headed back to their vehicle. Both the cars then drove towards Civil Lines, stopping on the way at a fuel station, where, the victim told the cops, his captors got his i20 refuelled, paying Rs 2,000 in the process.

Robbery

Their next destination was Preet Vihar. There, the men stopped at a 24-hour store and two of the abductors bought several things which they paid for with the businessman’s debit card. After some discussion, the trio decided to drive towards Sonipat in Haryana. According to the victim, the Santro parted company with them on reaching Daryaganj.
From Sonipat, the group later made its way to Connaught Place and halted there for an hour. They continued to threaten the businessman, telling him to stay silent or get shot. As dawn neared, the i20 car drove towards Shahdara. There, the men withdrew Rs 5,000 from an ATM. They then stopped the car near Shyam Lal College and left the businessman with his car.
As his captors fled in the direction of Seelampur in northeast Delhi, the young man dialled 100 and informed the police about his ordeal. A case was registered for kidnapping under Section 365 of the Indian Penal Code, for robbery (Section 392) and for committing robbery with attempt to cause death (Section 397). Investigators are scanning the CCTV footage along the probable route taken by car for clues to the identity of the criminals. The staff of the 24-hourstore is also being questioned for information about the three men.
