SASARAM: Women from red light area, who used to give a common fictitious name ‘Rupchandra’ in the column meant for father’s name while filling school admission forms for their children, have now started providing correct names. The women, however, leave the address column blank and mention the occupation of the father of their children as “worker”.
Over 60 children of sex workers at Banarasia on the outskirts of Sasaram are happy that they now know the names of their fathers.
Of the 213 children enrolled in primary school at Banarasia, 24 are from the red light area.
Meena Devi, headmistress of the school, said the women sex workers do not hesitate now in providing the names of the children’s fathers. “These women never miss the fortnightly parent-teacher meeting in the school. In fact, children from red light area are performing well in examinations,” Meena said.
The primary school at Banarasis is not alone. It was observed in more than 12 government-run primary and middle schools in and around the red light areas of Rohtas district that many children, who earlier used to provide fictitious names of their fathers, are now mentioning the correct names.
At Fazalganj middle school, the father’s name column is filled with genuine names. About 30 children of 50 families attend the classes regularly. “No fictitious father name has appeared in the admission register,” said Ram Kumar, a tola sevak, who is also from the same red light area.
