LUCKNOW: The government primary school in Moorghat, Basti has scored another high after registering an increase in enrolment from 19 students to 235 in two years — its principal Sarvesht Mishra has been selected for National Award. The awarded will be given by vice-president Venkaiah Naidu in national capital on the eve of teacher’s day.
Mishra, the only teacher from UP to have won the award this year, has many achievements to his name.
In 2016, when he was appointed principal of Adarsh Primary School, Moorghat, the building was on verge of collapse with cobwebs in classrooms. The only toilet was locked, and there was no drinking water. Children sat on the floor. In less than two years, Mishra has transformed it into a model school.
“I began with renovating the building and strengthening infrastructure. I visited more than 250 households and requested the parents to send their kids to school. I could bring the change only with public support,” Mishra said.
The school now boasts of smart teaching with projectors, white boards, audio-visual aids and recording equipment along with pre-loaded lesson plans for English, maths, science, environmental sciences and general knowledge. The students sit on chairs donated by locals.
“More than 70% students can converse in English. We now have four toilets, two each for boys and girls with running water. Our students use laptops and tablets,” Mishra said.
“We feel proud to have such a dedicated teacher among us,” said basic education additional director Lalita Pradeep. Mishra was chosen among the six names recommended by the state government.
