KOLKATA: In two separate incidents, a man and a woman in their 20s jumped into the Hooghly river on Friday. However both of them were pulled out of the water and are now recuperating at different hospitals.
Around 4.30pm, a 27-year-old man climbed the railings of Howrah bridge near pillar No 5 on the Howrah end and jumped into the river leaving his wallet and mobile phone on the footpath.

A traffic policeman spotted him climbing the rails and he immediately ran towards the bank and plunged in the water and rescued the drowning man. The youth was taken to Kolkata Medical College and Hospital. Police later identified him as Sanjay Kumar Mahato, a resident of Maniktala, who allegedly claimed to have attempted a suicide after his girlfriend had walked out of the relationship.
Earlier in the day, a woman in his mid twenties on board a Howrah-bound launch from Chandpal Ghat jumped into the river.
The woman was saved by a 22-year-old employee of another launch.
"The woman was unconscious and had consumed a lot of water. She was administered CPR and was taken to Kolkata Medical College and Hospital. Later she was taken to Sambhunath Pundit Hospital but even as her condition became a bit stable, she was unconscious till late in the evening and thus could not be identified," said a senior officer at Lalbazar police headquarters.
Police said the woman was clad in a yellow salwar kameez and was wearing a burqa.
