GIIA launches development forum

THE Guernsey International Insurance Association has launched a new event series, the insurance development forum, for people keen to progress their career in the industry.

Dominic Wheatley, chief executive of Guernsey Finance, will be speaking at the Guernsey International Insurance Association’s insurance development forum.

The aim is to provide regular industry updates through the year covering a wide range of topics and providing networking opportunities – with the first session taking place in the Colborne Room at the Old Government House Hotel at 4pm on Tuesday 18 September.

The event will include a GIIA update by deputy chairman Mark Elliott, Guernsey Finance chief executive Dominic Wheatley and a session on demystifying risk modelling by Xavier John.

The short panel discussion will be followed by GIIA’s annual summer drinks event which begins at 5pm.

The content of future sessions will be directed by attendees, with all feedback used to shape the format of the forum, which is expected to evolve into an incubator for the future of the insurance industry.

Pertinent technical topics will sit alongside personal development topics, such as mindfulness and leadership skills, offering a broad range of learning opportunities for insurance professionals.

‘Our goal with the forum is to engage people in the profession and to make them more aware of GIIA and opportunities within the industry. We are very pleased to have Barclays and BDO to support the forum,’ said GIIA deputy chairman Mark Elliott.

Nigel Winkett, head of captives and offshore insurance at Barclays, said: ‘In line with our shared growth ambition, Barclays are delighted to be involved with this new initiative, promoting opportunities for learning and development and supporting career aspirations for the next generation throughout the offshore insurance sector.’

Nathan Hodder, audit director at BDO Guernsey, said the firm was pleased to play an active part in developing the future of the insurance sector. ‘At BDO we believe our people are our greatest asset, we put a strong emphasis on helping them to reach their full potential and achieve their career goals. We are pleased to be able to extend that ethos to the wider insurance industry,’ he also said.

Registration for the event is via Eventbrite prior to Friday 7 September.
