The election for 105 Urban Local Body (ULB) across Karnataka was held on Wednesday, August 29. The local bodies across 24 districts of the State registered an average voting percentage of 63.8, according to polling data from the SEC released on Friday night.
The ruling coalition partners Congress, Janata Dal Secular and Bahujan Samaj Party have garnered nearly 50% of the total seats declared so far with Congress bagging highest number of seats in the urban local bodies, results of which have started coming in.

Lucky draw election
R.S. Sathyaranarayana Raju of JD(S) was elected from 15th ward of Shivamogga City Corporation that comprise Harige and surrounding localities through a lucky draw.
When the counting of votes was completed, Mr. Raju as well as his rival S. Rajashekhar of Congress had bagged 1,708 votes each. Following this, both Mr. Raju and Mr. Rajashekhar had submitted application for re-counting of votes. The re-counting also threw the same result.
In wake of this development, Channabasappa K., Additional Deputy Commissioner rushed to the counting room. As per the procedure, he made arrangements for a lucky draw to elect the winning candidate. Separate chits bearing the names of Mr. Raju and Mr. Rajashekhar were put in a container and the winner was picked by the Returning Officer.
With this, the counting of votes for Shivamogga City Corporation was concluded. The BJP put up a stunning electoral show by winning 20 of the total 35 seats here. The Congress managed to win seven seats, JD(S) has bagged two seats while the independents registered victory in six seats.
Results in Hassan district
Congress wins 3 ULBs in Gadag, BJP wins two, Laxmeshwar ULB is hung
In the election to the six ULBs in Gadag district, the Congress has managed to come to power in three local bodies while BJP has come to power in two local bodies. Laxmeshwar received a hung verdict though Congress won more seats.
In the election to 123 wards of six urban local bodies in the district Congress won 57 seats with BJP closely following it with 54 seats. While JD(S) secured two seats, a total of ten independents won from the district from different segments.
Congress will be in power in Shirahatti Town Panchayat as it won all 10 seats. In Mulagund Town Panchayat, Congress won 15 out of total 19; in Ron Town Municipal Council, it won 15 out of total 23 seats.
Meanwhile, BJP won 18 out of 28 seats in Gajendragad Town Municipal Council and win 12 out of total 17 seats in Naregal Town Panchayat.
In Laxmeshwar Town Municipal Council, where there is no clear verdict, Congress won 9 seats closely followed by BJP with 7. Five independent candidates have won in Laxmeshwar.
Congress gains majority in Kuditini Town Panchayat
Congress gained majority in the newly upgraded Kuditini Town Panchayat, while no party got majority to stake claim to gain control of the Kottur Town Panchayat in Ballari district.
In Kuditini, Congress bagged 11 out of total 19 seats and would be gaining the control of the newly formed town panchayat. BJP won only eight seats.
In Kottur, Congress emerged as the single largest party by winning nine seats, short by two seats to stake claim to gain control, while BJP has won eight seats. Independents bagged the remaining three seats.
Elections were held to only these two ULBs in Ballari district.
BJP wins Puttur CMC, fractured mandate in two other ULBs in Dakshina Kannada district
BJP snatched Puttur CMC from Congress in the recently concluded elections to urban local bodies (ULBs) in the Dakshina Kannada district while there was fractured mandate in Ullal CMC and Bantwal TMC.
No party gained enough seats to lead Bantwal Town Municipal Council where Congress secured 12 seats, BJP 11 and SDPI 4.
Similarly in Ullal, Congress won 13 seats while BJP and SDPI won six each, JDS won 4 and independents 2.
BJP won as many as 25 wards while Congress was successful in five and SDPI in one ward in Puttur CMC.
Ullal comes under Mangaluru Assembly constituency represented by Housing and Urban Development Minister U.T. Khader (Congress) while Puttur is represented by BJP's Sanjeev Matandur. Bantwal is represented by BJP MLA U. Rajesh Naik,who defeated former minister B. Ramanath Rai of Congress in the recent assembly elections.
Though Congress can hold the reigns in Ullal with the support of JDS, Mr. Khader told reporters here on Monday that the party prefers to sit in the opposition. Regarding Bantwal, he said local leadership would take a call .
Congress dominates in Kalaburagi district
The results from Kalaburagi district showed the clear dominance of Congress. Of the seven ULBs – six Town Municipal Councils (TMC) and a City Municipal Council (CMC) – the Congress is set to assume power in five ULBs. It has managed to win Shahabad CMC by bagging 18 seats out of 27 leaving five for BJP and three for Independents.
In Chittapur, the constituency of Social Welfare Minister Priyank Kharge, Congress has won 18 seats out of 23 leaving just five for BJP. In Chincholi, it has bagged 12 seats out of 23 leaving five seats for BJP, one each for Janata Dal (Secular) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and four for independent candidates.
In Afzalpur, the election was held for 22 Wards out of 23 as all the nominations in one Ward (Ward No 19) were rejected during the scrutiny. In Aland, Congress and BJP bagged 13 seats each leaving one seat for JD(S). Considering the terms between the Congress and JD(S), the Congress is expected to assume power with JD(S) support.
BJP could perform better only in two TMCs – Sedam and Jevargi. In Sedam, it won 13 seats out of 23 leaving 10 seats for Congress. In Jevargi, it bagged 17 of the 23 seats leaving three each for Congress and JD(S).
By 12.59 pm, the results of all the 168 wards for which the elections were held (excluding Ward No. 19 in Afzalpur), were declared. Congress was leading with 90 seats followed by BJP (63), JD-S (6) and BSP (1).
Eight wards were won by independent candidates.
Congress, JD(S) may join hands in Mysuru, Tumakaru
Two of the three city corporations that went into polls is likely to go the ruling coalition despite BJP emerging as the single largest party as no party has clear majority.
The Congress, JD(S) and BSP have clear numbers to wrest the Mysuru City Corporation. In the 65 member council, Congress has won 19, JD(S) 17, and BSP has won one seat. The BJP has won 22 and independents have won five seats.
In Tumakuru City Corporation that has a total 35 seats, Congress and JD(S) have secured 10 seats each while BJP has won 12 and three independents have won.
With an already announced post-poll tie up, these two corporations is likely to go to the coalition.
For BJP, best performance is coming at Shivamogga City Corporation. The party has won 20 out of 35 seats.
BJP wins Shivamogga CMC
The Bharatiya Janata Party is all set to come to power in Shivamogga City Corporation by winning 20 of the total 35 seats here.
The Congress party has managed to win six seats, Janata Dal (Secular) has bagged one seat while the independents have registered victory in 6 seats. The counting of votes for Harige ward is yet to conclude.
Nagaraj Kankari of JD(S), incumbent Mayor has won from Gandhi Nagar ward.
Congress, BJP win one CMC each in DK
Of the three ULBs that went for poll in Dakshina Kannada on August 31, BJP bagged Puttur and Congress, Ullal.
In Bantwal, however, no party got clear majority with Congress bagging 12 seats, BJP 11 and SDPI 4.
In Ullal, Congress won 13 seats while BJP and SDPI six each, JD(S) won 4 and Independents 2.
Congress candidates were victorious in 12 wards of Bantwal while BJP nominees got elected in 11 and SDPI in 4.
BJP won as many as 25 wards while Congress was successful in five and SDPI in one ward.
Mysuru disyrict ULB polls : Periyapatna Town Panchayat (TP) goes to JD(S).
Congress emerges as the single largest party in T Narsipur and H.D. Kote TPs with no party getting clear majority. Congress is likely to form the Council with the support of Independents
The JD(S) is set to hold power in all five ULBs of the Hassan district. Of the 35 wards in Hassan City Municipal Council (CMC), the party has bagged 17 seats. The BJP has won 13 seats, while the Congress could get only two seats. Independents have won three seats.
The party has won required number of seats in Channarayapatna Town Municipal Council (TMC) and Sakaleshpur TMC.
It is leading in all 23 wards of Holenarasipur. In Arasikere CMC the JD(S) is leading in 22 of 31 seats.
Congress captures more seats
Of the total 2,709 seats across 108 urban local bodies, results of 2,327 seats have been declared till noon. While Congress candidates have been declared winners in 864 seats, opposition BJP has bagged 811 seats. Congress's coalition partners Janata Dal Secular and Bahujan Samaj Party have bagged 312 and 13 respectively. Independents have won 293 seats.
Meanwhile, midway through the results and trends declared by Karnataka State Election Commission, several local bodies are headed towards fractured verdict.
In local bodies with fractured mandate, Congress and JD(S) are likely to stake claim as agreed by the leaders of respective parties. Incidentally, two parties that have been part of ruling coalition did not have any pre-poll tie-up and fielded candidates independently.
Results as on 11:00 am
Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) is heading towards a hung house with no party in a position to secure a simple majority in the 65-member civic body.
However, BJP appears set to emerge as the single largest party by winning or leading in a total of 22 seats closely followed by the Congress with 19 seats and JD (S) with 18 seats. Independents have triumphed in the remaining six seats of MCC.
BJP wins in Kundapur TMC, Saligrama Town Panchayat
The BJP has won in elections for local bodies of Kundapur Town Municipal Council (TMC) and Saligrama Town Panchayat.
Of a total of 23 seats in Kundapur TMC, the BJP bagged 14 seats, Congress 8 and independent 1.
In Saligrama Town Panchayat, the BJP won 10 seats, Congress 5 and independent - 1. The total strength of the house is 16.
Of a total of 23 wards in Karkala Town Municipal Council (TMC), the Congress and BJP won 11 seats each, while one has gone to an independent candidate, who is a BJP rebel candidate.
Counting has ended in Aland. Of the total 27 seats, Congress and BJP have won 13 each and the JD(S) got one seat.
In Jewargi, BJP won 17 seats, while Congress and JD(S) got three each.
Congress has won 18 out of 27 seats in Shahabad. While BJP won five seats, JD(S) got one. The remaining three went to independents.
The Janata Dal (Secular) has retained its power in Channarayapatnat Town Municipal Council (TMC) in Hassan district. Of the 23 wards, the party has won 15 seats. The Congress won the remaining eight seats.
BJP snatches Udupi CMC from Congress
The BJP has won in the local body elections for Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC). The BJP bagged 31 seats out of a total of 35 seats, while Congress got only 4 seats. The BJP has snatched the CMC from Congress.
Hassan continues to be JD(S) bastion
The Janata Dal (Secular) continues to remain strong in its bastion Hassan.
Of the 135 wards of five urban local bodies, which went to the polls on August 31, the results of 46 wards have been declared so far. Among them, the JD(S) candidates have won 26 seats, the Congress secured 10, the BJP five seats, besides Independents in five.
The JD(S) is leading in all 23 wards of Holenarasipur, native of Chief Minister H.D.Kumaraswamy and his brother H.D.Revanna, PWD Minister.
The counting of votes polled in 23 wards of Sakaleshpur TMC has been completed. The JD(S) has won 14 seats, more than the number required to hold the power. The Congress won four seats, the BJP could get only two and the Independents won three.
