Canteen operator robbed on Pune-Ahmednagar highway

PUNE: The flourishing canteen business in Ranjangaon MIDC on Pune–Ahmednagar highway and in the companies located in neighbouring villages is attracting many eyes. However, on Tuesday morning, the competition to acquire the contract to the run a canteen took a violent turn.
Four unidentified men, all occupants of a sports utility vehicle, robbed food packets meant for employees of a private company producing engines located at Ranjangaon MIDC.
The suspects robbed boxes of vegetables, chapatti, rice, salad and kheer, totally worth Rs 12,500 after beating up the canteen operator.
The canteen operator of the company, Manoj Ashokrao Layase (31) of Shirur has lodged a complaint with the Shikrapur police station after the incident. Before robbing Layase, the suspects issued threats of dire consequences to him saying that he should discontinue his contact with the company as they are trying to get the contract from the company.
According to Layase’s complaint, he and his two employees were taking food packets to the company in their car at around 11am on Tuesday. A speeding SUV overtook their car on the highway. The suspects forced Layase to halt his car.
Four men alighted from the SUV and beat up Layase and his two employees following which they issued threats of dire consequences to him and warned him. They then robbed food packets and sped away from the scene.
