In the first case, BS Rekha ordered death penalty to Suresh Babu, who was arrested on charges of attempting to rape a schoolgirl in Malur before murdering her. The incident happened on August 1 and the judgment was delivered in a record 45 days.
In the second case, four persons were slapped with death sentence for raping a minor girl at Kuppur village in Masthi near Malur on May 28, 2014.
The convicted are Munikrishna, Narayanaswamy, Anilkumar and Krishnamurthy.
Proceedings began in the morning with the judge hearing the first case where the 16-year-old girl was murdered when she was returning home after a sports meet in Malur. After hearing the pleas of special public prosecutor Muniswamy Gowda and the defence counsel, the judge told Suresh Babu he had been found guilty and would be convicted. She posted the case in the afternoon for pronouncing the quantum of punishment. When the hearing resumed, she announced death penalty for Suresh Babu.
