The previous president of Florida for Aetna was elevated to a different position with the company.

Aetna has promoted Richard Weiss to president of its Florida market, which has over 1.4 million members in its health plans.

He replaces Chris Ciano, who was recently named president of the Medicare division for Aetna (NYSE: AET).

Based in its Sunrise office, Weiss is responsible for Aetna’s small group, large group, public/labor and Medicare business throughout Florida. He was previously Aetna’s executive director for Florida and, before that, Aetna's CFO for the state.

“Richard brings strong leadership and a well-rounded background from within the company,” said Jonathan Mayhew, Aetna’s president of markets. “His industry experience and business acumen makes him the right choice to lead our Florida operations.”

Before joining Aetna, Weiss worked in executive positions for UnitedHealth Group and for hospital companies. A CPA, he holds a B.S. in accounting from Florida State University.

Aetna ranked sixth on the Business Journal’s list of largest Health Insurance Providers in Florida.
